canarian prospects
Spellbound by the stunning landscapes, I have been coming back to the Canary Islands again and again for the last thirty years. But today, it is more than just the geographical features that fascinate me. There are now the outlandish and bizarre excesses of civilization and the recent economic crises. What traces are we leaving behind, how are we treating nature? Do the Canaries really need all the highways funded by the European Union, and the fully automatic beach toilets that never really worked properly, and are now just foreign bodies rusting away on the sea front? The belief in never-ending growth and limitless profit have left behind maltreated and eerie landscapes. The strivings for prosperity and success have their price, and it is nature that suffers. |
